The eightieth anniversary of the atomic bomb attacks on Japan, occasioned the mounting of Nuclear Topographies, at Artspace TMU, Toroonto Metropolitan University’s offsite, student-run gallery space. The photography exhibition brings together the work of Dr. Blake Fitzpatrick, and recent School of Image Arts graduates Logan Rayment and Avery Nielsen-Webb. The work of these established and emerging artists and scholars, explore the ways in which the nuclear industry has permanently altered the natural landscape.
As part of this exhibition I had the distinct pleasure of moderating a panel conversation with the artists. During the talk we touched on the blurred distinctions between civilian and military nuclear industries, how the atomic era is popularly represented and commemorated, and the incalculable geological time scales of nuclear waste.
Thanks so much to Artspace TMU for hosting this exhibition and this conversation. Nuclear Topographies, runs thrugh November 15, 2025.
