ABOUT THE RENAMING & RECLAIMING: INDIGENOUS PLACEMAKING WALKING TOUR

“Join us on this walk to reconnect with space, the environment, and learn about the XU campus from the perspective of decolonial history and Indigenous placemaking.

We will be engaging with the buried waterways, traditional plants, original landscapes, architecture, and untold stories of resistance on the XU campus.

Most importantly, we will journey through the environment while focusing on the importance of how Indigenous plant species are thriving amongst these manufactured landscapes, while themselves resisting concrete and colonialism from the land itself.

Lastly, concepts of memory, place, public art and reimagining the XU campus with new knowledge of the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg, Treaty 13, the Toronto Purchase will leave participants with a new understanding as to what histories and stories have been erased or hidden by statues and stone.”
